Knowing your numbers
Reports built around the decisions you actually make, rather than around a filing deadline six months after the fact.
How it works
01
Pricing, hiring, which work to chase. The pack is designed backwards from the decisions.
02
Drawn from your bookkeeping. The first version is a draft; the second is usually the one that sticks.
03
Delivered on a fixed rhythm and reviewed with you, changing shape as you use it.
Who it is for
You run the business off the bank balance, because it is the only live number.
You could not say which product, service or client is most profitable.
Your financial statements arrive months after the period they describe.
The decisions have got large enough that guessing is uncomfortable.
A lender or investor wants regular reporting and producing it ruins a week.
Questions
Financial statements are prepared to an external standard, for CRA, lenders and shareholders, and they arrive after the year is finished. Management reports are prepared for you, on your terms, while the period is still live. One is a record and the other is an instrument — most businesses need both and only ever commission the first.
No, but it is considerably cheaper if we do, because the reporting draws directly on the ledger. Where someone else keeps the books we will work from their output — the practical requirement is that the records are reliable and reconciled, wherever they come from.
The first pack tells you where you stand. The value builds from the third or fourth, once there is enough history for a trend and enough iteration that the pack reflects how you actually think about the business.
It scales down. A five-person business does not need a twenty-page pack — it needs three numbers, monthly, that it does not currently have. The failure mode we see is not businesses that are too small for reporting, it is packs that are too big for the business.
